The small cracks that become giant crevices in a creaky marriage can be predicted even before a couple marry in most cases, according to Katherine Clements, a PhD and relationship advice counselor at the Institute of Family Studies.

"Many of the issues that couples feel will be resolved once they marry intensify if they're not dealt with early in the relationship" says Dr Clements, "Quite often they've reached breaking point by the time they seek help."

But don't despair! If you're about to walk down the aisle and want to divorce-proof your relationship, most problems can be overcome before they turn into major conflicts.

"We believe all couples would benefit from two or three pre-marriage counseling sessions," adds Dr Clements, "Prevention is better than cure, and if we can identify the problems early enough, we can help the couple find a way to overcome what may cause major rifts later on."

Not surprisingly, one of the major causes of marriage problems is a lack of communication. Being able to openly discuss your feelings, thoughts, concerns and joys with your partner strengthens bonds, enhances intimacy and helps resolve conflicts before they arise.

Another major reason for seeking relationship advice is an inability to confront the problems, says a best-selling relationship expert.
