Birthstones are believed to date back to the first century and were represented by different gemstones in many ancient cultures.

The power and attributes of the birthstone were said to be especially enhanced if worn during the month it represented. For example, someone born in April would be blessed by love if they wore diamonds, their birthstone, during that month.

Although there are a number of different birthstone charts in various cultures, the American National Association of Jewelers adopted the official list used today in most Western cultures.
